To Patch or not to Patch

Several clients have asked me what should they do about the 'An Update is Ready' message that pops up in the sys-tray(bottom right corner of most screens).
Well the answer is not as simple as it might seem.
If you are in the middle of doing some big piece of work you would be well advised to complete it and save a backup before clicking 'yes'.
Not all patches are critical and if you set your machine to autoupdate there are occasions when the update will stop part of your computer working until it is rebooted (techie term for turn it off and back on again using the software re-start option).
In business networks your system administrator will assess the patches and release them to your machine in a planned way so these should be done asap after you first see the message.
For home users you are best off installing them all as they arrive - just blame the supplier and not me if they cause a problem.
