Strokes

Wednesday, 30th March 2005 by Neville Clark

Behaviour of our children and staff is largely a reflection of our behavioural model in front of them.

Strangely - parents and bosses often mirror their subordinates behaviour.

Strokes is a word with many meanings, but here we are referring to the stroke you give a well behaved cat or dog. 'A pat on the back' so to speak.

This act sends a powerful message of respect and positive praise to lift the bond with the recipients to a higher behavioural plane.

For example you ask for something to be done and when it is done you say thankyou, but does your body language say thankyou? The other things you need to put into the stroke are:

  1. Embellishments - say what is so good - pick three things
  2. Smile - show you are are very happy
  3. Get close - show you are warm (cuddle if appropriate)
  4. Give a reward if this behaviour is new
  5. Remember and repeat - remind them about it later

This gives you maximum lift in the relationship.

NB - it works both ways so if your boss is cold towards you...
