ROUTINE

I have always been of the opinion that routines are boring - the things we do routinely are the droll, everyday, repetitive, maintenance, service and patch-up type tasks and habits of every day life.

Then, just the other day, I read a document that fell out of an old folder I was sifting before binning, dated 1974 and titled "Leadership Skills".  It caught my interest because I wanted to see how much things have changed.

After perusing it for 30mins I had reached the back page and not much stood out as different to today and the last line of the last page leapt out at me.  It was under he heading of 'Signs of Low Esteem' and it  said "Finds routine tasks boring".

I was gob-smacked.

Don't we all find routine tasks boring?

This set me thinking of why 'routine' is interesting to 'High Self-Esteem' people and guess what; they re-classify or re-define routine.  They picture all tasks as buildings block for success - a foundation stone on which the non-routine task stand. So it has to be done differently or better each time and with an attitude of enthusiasm for the success picture it is a fundamental part of.

So - the next time you find yourself thinking "This job is boring, I do it every day and always the same thing" you are falling into the trap low self-esteem people fall into.  Get out of it quick by looking for new ways of viewing what you are doing that relate it directly to your future success.  IE if you are cleaning a window - relate it to letting light into your life.  If you are washing the car relate it to being clean and respectable for your next customer or visitor.

It is a direct relative of the saying "look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves".
