Plan to Fail

Wednesday, 4th May 2005 by Neville Clark

Planning is fun and it simply requires us to divide what we want to achieve in the future into steps we have to take.

It is the most important part of your new venture.

As the old saying goes - fail to plan and you are planning to fail.

Each step must have the following things defined:

  • Start Date and Time
  • Schedule of time allocated (what hours each day if poss)
  • A clear statement of how you will measure your achievement
  • Entry Criteria (what you must have before you start)
  • Exit Criteria (what you must have achieved before you can say the step is complete)
  • Defined Rewards - always reward yourself for your achievements as you go
  • Go/No Go Criteria - always define what would cause you to stop the step
  • Review Criteria and Dates - the review is when your whole team meet
  • Team Roles and Responsibilities - defined and agreed through a buy-in process

Any one aspect missing can cause a step to falter.

All things in place provide a firm footing for the next step and so on...
