MOT

Tuesday, 29th March 2005 by Neville Clark

The Gov't are so concerned about our safety they have a department dedicated to transport and a key function of that department is to ensure our vehicles are roadworthy.

Right?

Wrong? The MOT only means that a human being was prepared to accept what they found out about your vehicle as good enough to meet the criteria laid down on the day they looked at it.

So what does the MOT system achieve?

It means that statistically speaking the roads are safer than they would be if it were abolished.  It is the statistics that form the basis for having a checking process not the facts of any individual case.

My point here is that sometimes you need to gather data and analyse it before you make decisions.  This is especially true when it come to new businesses.  You say you will sell five of your 'Product B' a week so you get £52000 a year.  Even if you based this on your mate down the road doing the same thing it would be worth you gathering data and analysing it before launching your own business.  They key is identifying the measurement criteria to put on your list.

How did the MOT criteria list get established?

Years of trial and error - with refinements each year to take into account the new factors - eg emissions of toxic gases.  At the start a group of people looked at the problem and made a list of things they thought were important to road safety.  They presented this to the independent bodies representing the motorist paying for the test and they haggled to agree.

So this is what you do with your success team - first task is to draw up the list of criteria and then gather the data and analyse it.  Simple.
