“Sir John Harvey-Jones
would turn in his grave!”

Gurus Gripe

Monday, 21st March 2005 by Neville Clark

I was once told this story about the new boss coming in to a big IT company and laying off lots of his IT staff.  The story goes that a few months later the computer system failed and the remaining staff could not fix it.

After days of trying and with the new boss jumping up and down with rage they sent for an 'ITGuru' from America.  He arrived and was told what the problem was and he went to the server room, opened the third rack door, flicked the reset switch and closed the door.  The system re-started fine and the Guru left.

The next thing to happen is the new boss is jumping up and down shouting at the IT Manager waving an invoice around.  "This is outrageous he barks - 97,000 for pushing a switch" yes says the IT Manager, but he knew which switch and that was worth 97,000.

The morale of this story is knowledge is valuable, but often that value is never realised; a chap that was laid off probably knew how to fix that problem as they had been running the system before.  The key is knowing what you need to know as soon as possible and getting access to that knowledge as cost effectively as you can.

If you have a good idea make the most of it while it is fresh in your mind, write it down and choose a friend you can trust to go through it and check what you have written for

  • clarity - is it clear what your idea is about
  • validity - is it feasible - are your assumptions valid
  • value - is it going to be valued by someone

Then start to expand your success team - draw a plan of the stages your idea has to go through to reach success (in your eyes).  If you have problems with this then the first person to find is your 'Success Strategist' a person that knows a great deal about all types of businesses and does not get embroiled in details (Neville on our team fills this role perfectly).

Once the strategy is mapped out you can find the people and contacts that will help you make it happen, take action, personally invest in your idea.

None of this need cost a penny as with the right team and approach the team give their services for a share of the success of the end product.

Win Win.
